Obese Planet is a campaign run by the World Obesity Federation focused on; driving action on childhood obesity, guaranteeing obesity is covered by Universal Health Coverage and ensuring obesity features prominently in the outcomes of the 2018 High-level meeting on NCDs.
The campaign name reflects the fact that obesity is a global challenge; it also builds on the growing importance of the planetary health agenda.
Obesity affects the whole planet. Worldwide obesity has nearly tripled since 1975, leading to more than 1.9 billion adults being overweight in 2016 – over 650 million of whom are living with obesity.
This is not a 'rich world' problem - it affects all countries. Between 1980 and 2015, obesity in India doubled for children and tripled for adults. More than a quarter of Chinese children are expected to be living with obesity or overweight by 2030.
Obesity is a global epidemic and the disease is a gateway to chronic diseases, with people living with obesity more likely to suffer from cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.'
